For many families, August is an exciting time. Learn to Skate registrations are opening, hockey and figure skating seasons are just around the corner, and children are getting ready to step onto the ice for the very first time.

A successful skating season doesn't begin on the first day of lessons—it begins before your child ever steps onto the ice.

The First Experience Matters

A child's first few skating sessions often shape how they feel about skating for years to come.

If they spend most of their lesson falling backwards, feeling frustrated, or relying on someone to hold them up, it's easy to lose confidence.

On the other hand, when children can stand, move, and experience early success, they're more likely to enjoy skating and want to keep learning.

Confidence grows with every positive experience.

Preparing Before the First Lesson

A little preparation goes a long way. Before your first Learn to Skate session, make sure your child has:

•  Properly fitted skates
•  A CSA-approved hockey helmet
•  Warm, comfortable clothing and gloves
•  Encouragement and realistic expectations

Most importantly, remember that every child learns at their own pace. The goal isn't perfection—it's helping them enjoy being on the ice.
